3 SUMMER PESTS THAT CAN DAMAGE YOUR YARD

Summer is the time of year you typically spend time outdoors, and the time when your yard becomes an absolutely vital part of your day-to-day routine–especially if you have kids and/or pets. If you put a lot of effort into making your yard look immaculate, you might even take a lot of pride in the work you’ve done. The only problem? There are pests out there looking to make your yard their own personal playground, and sometimes they can cause some serious damage. It’s important to know exactly which pests can turn a gorgeous yard into a dug-up and chewed-up mess; here are 3 summer pests that can pose a threat to your yard!

BURROWERS

While this is actually a category of pest more than one specific pest, it’s important to know that there are a host of critters that can burrow and make a mess of your yard. In fact, the number of animals that present a burrowing threat may surprise you:

  • Moles
  • Voles
  • Rats
  • Chipmunks
  • Squirrels
  • Groundhogs
  • Skunks

In other words, there are a whole lot of animals that can sneak onto your property and start burrowing damaging holes.

CRICKETS

While relatively new to North Carolina, mole crickets have become an unwelcome staple of many North Carolina lawns, and while they don’t cause the same sort of damage as, say, a burrowing animal, they still pose a threat to your yard. What kind of a threat? Namely, mole crickets earn their namesake by tunneling into the soil near the roots and stems of grass plants. This tunneling can uproot grass, killing it and ruining patches of lawns.

There are 3 signs of mole crickets in your yard:

  1. Small mounds of dirt scattered on the soil surface
  2. A spongy feeling lawn, caused by detached soil
  3. Browning or dead grass in parts of your lawn

FLEAS & TICKS

Ok, these insects won’t cause any visible yard damage, but the presence of either fleas or ticks (or even worse, both) can definitely do some damage to your peace of mind when it comes to the safety of your lawn. Fleas and ticks are both disease carriers, and can very quickly turn into an infestation that’s more than just a nuisance, but a legitimate danger. This can become an even more serious issue- like many other yard-related pest problems- if you have young children and/or pets.
