Stink Bug Control in Mooresville

How to Recognize Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs

Adult brown marmorated stink bugs are shield-shaped, brown on their upper and lower surfaces, and approximately 17 millimeters long. They’re commonly noticed resting on walls, windows, curtains, and other surfaces after entering a home.

These insects don’t bite or sting people. They also don’t feed on occupants, household contents, or the structure itself, and they don’t reproduce inside structures or during winter. Indoors, their numbers and defensive odor make them a nuisance.

Stink bugs can release this odor when disturbed or crushed. In people sensitive to it, exposure can trigger rhinitis, which is inflammation inside the nose, or conjunctivitis, which is inflammation of the membrane covering the eye and inner eyelid.

Why Stink Bugs Enter Homes in Fall

Stink bugs are common overwintering pests in the greater Charlotte region. They seek protected places where they can remain through colder weather and may begin looking for suitable shelter in late August and early September.

Indoor activity usually traces back to insects that entered through exterior cracks and gaps during fall, often from late September through October. They may remain hidden before appearing around windows or in living spaces. An odor associated with an overwintering location can also attract more stink bugs to the area.

Most stink bug damage occurs outdoors, where the insects feed on garden and agricultural plants. Once inside, they’re nuisance pests rather than insects that damage wood, furnishings, or stored belongings.

Ways to Reduce Stink Bug Entry

Prevention focuses on closing common access routes and limiting sheltered areas near the exterior. These steps are most useful before seasonal activity increases, but visible openings can be addressed whenever they’re found.

Common stink bug prevention measures include:

• Seal exterior openings: Address cracks, gaps around utility penetrations, and openings around doors and windows.
• Check door sweeps: Replace damaged or missing sweeps that leave space beneath exterior doors.
• Repair screens: Keep window and door screens intact to block accessible routes indoors.
• Clear foundation debris: Remove debris near the foundation that can provide sheltered areas around the home.

Home maintenance can reduce available entry points, but it can’t explain every instance of indoor activity. When stink bugs continue appearing, a professional evaluation can identify where they’re gathering and which areas warrant closer attention.
